With the current wait time for a first appointment at a London Gender Identity Clinic approximately five years, GP surgeries are under increasing pressure to provide care for transgender and non-binary patients, often with no specialist training.
Due to the lack of formal training, patients often feel their health needs are not being met by clinical and non-clinical staff.
HCL’s new training programme is designed for Primary Care staff who want to better support their trans and non-binary patients.
The training is led by Dr Joanna Lovett a SPIN fellow for Central London on Trans Health and salaried GP working in Central London practice with contribution from Dr Tara Suchak, Service Director for TransPlus Clinic at 56 Dean Street and HIV/GUM Consultant.
95% of attendees found the training useful or very useful:
“Extremely helpful overview of the landscape of issues and services patients with trans and non-binary identifies might be experiencing. Contraception considerations particularly helpful.”
“Delivered by a GP from the perspective of the challenges faced in primary care in delivering good, safe medical care to this group of patients.”
“This was an incredibly helpful and useful talk on an area which often causes uncertainty. Truly inspiring work!”
“Sensitively and honest presentation of a challenging topic.”
