What
are
First

Physiotherapists
and
what
can
they
do?

First Contact Practitioners (FCPs) are highly specialist physios who can  provide rapid access to a specialist assessment for musculoskeletal pains. In other words, anything that you would normally have expected/hoped to see a Physiotherapist about can be dealt with by FCPs.

FCPs take a history of your problem, conduct a through physical examination and then explain the findings and discuss what your options are. This may include help with self management/rehabilitation or referrals to another service if appropriate.

FCPs differ from “traditional” Physio’s in that it is an assessment and diagnosis only. It is not ongoing treatment or manual therapy (hands on treatment).

We also offer a Women’s Health FCP service which you can read more about here.

Who
do
FCPs
help?

FCPs can help anyone aged 16 and over with musculoskeletal pain/problems.

If you are struggling with muscular, joint, nerve  pain or think that a Physiotherapy assessment would be of benefit, then FCPs are definitely the right person for you to see.

  • A physical examination. The FCP may want to look at your range of movement, strength, sensation and conduct a neurological examination if appropriate. This will help the FCP decide on next steps to manage your problem.
  • A discussion about concerns and expectations which may include goal setting to help you get back on track.
  • If necessary, the FCP can arrange further investigation such as blood tests or scans. They may also discuss onward referral to another speciality if this is needed.
